Durham, North Carolina, is the kind of place where a simple afternoon turns into a fun-filled afternoon. We kicked off...
Welcome to the Southern Schoolhouse! My name is Shannon and I am a National Board Certified special education teacher in North Carolina. I have spent most of my career in a regular education classroom in third or fourth grade. I decided six years ago to switch to special education. I wanted to zoom in on the needs of students with learning challenges and build close relationships with these students as well as their families.
Outside of school, I live in a rural area in a small town with my husband and I have three children. My oldest daughter is about to finish graduate school, my son is a senior in college and my youngest daughter is a freshman in high school. Any working mom can understand how challenging it can be to have a full time job and to raise a family. Our hope is to share our experience and provide support to make things easier for other teachers as well as parents.
Welcome to the Southern Schoolhouse! I am so glad you are here. My name is Joy. I am a wife, mother of four, and a special education teacher. I began my career as a teacher for children with emotional impairments in the great state of Michigan where I was born and raised.
Once married, my husband and I moved to North Carolina where we actually moved into an old schoolhouse, thus inspiring the name of our site, the Southern Schoolhouse. I now teach cross-categorical kindergarten through fifth grade students in a resource classroom.
My passion is to help all children meet their full potential while encouraging families and educators to thrive, not just survive. I hope my experiences, and those of my dear colleagues, will help alleviate some pressure and bring a little more “joy” to your life.
Thank you for joining us at the Southern Schoolhouse! My name is Beth and I am a mother, a grandmother and a teacher. I am the mother to two adult daughters that are my heart, and “Sunshine” to my two precious granddaughters that are the joy of my life.
I am currently teaching 4th Grade in North Carolina. I have been in the classroom for over 30 years and spent most of that time teaching in Upper Elementary. I have always felt that teaching was my mission field. My hope is to touch the lives of my students in a positive way for that small moment in time they are in my classroom. I also love to learn, and I learn something new every day from my students, my colleagues, and the world around me. Our goal is to share that passion for learning with our students daily and here with each of you! Welcome to the journey!
