Day 2 is when routines start to take shape, but it’s also when we double down on community and connection. We reinforce expectations while giving space for movement and conversations.

We begin Day 2 by reviewing our Class Expectations chart. We sometimes add new items either based on student suggestions or things we noticed on Day 1 that need clarity. This helps students take ownership and realize expectations are flexible, ongoing, and built together.
To continue building classroom culture, we incorporate more back-to-school read-alouds from our New Year, New Reads: Back-to-School Picks for K–5 collection, article. These stories are powerful tools that help students manage anxiety, understand routines, and see examples of kindness and inclusion.

Because the first few days can be overwhelming, we make sure to include plenty of brain breaks and fun relationship-building activities. These activities could include a collaborative STEM activity that helps lay the groundwork for expectations when working with partners or in small groups. These short moments of joy and connection are just as important as academics in building a strong classroom culture.
Day 2 is a mix of structure and guidance. When you give kids space to move, connect, and reflect, while reinforcing clear expectations, you’re laying the foundation for the rest of the year. In Part 3 of Day 2, we’ll dive into how we begin academics and support smooth transitions, even with departmentalized classrooms.
