Trying for National Boards is challenging. Here are some of the organizational steps I took to make the process smoother.
Step 1
- Set Up a Notebook: I set up a notebook where I printed and divided each component section.
- Next, read each component instruction sheet. Use your pencil and highlighter to write ideas and highlight important information.
- Set your timelines and important dates. Whatever you use-planner, google calendar, desk calendar; USE IT! Write down all important deadlines and set your own timeline goals.
- Set up some type of digital system to organize your materials. I used google docs to set up folders for each of my components housed in a main folder labeled National Boards.
Step 2
- Using my electronic organization system, I added each required component document. For example, if component 3 requires two video forms, create them in that folder. This makes it easy to cut and paste your candidate id number into each and keep track of what to submit.
- As you add your component documents, remember to also add blank documents for your written commentaries. Set these up with your needed font, spacing and candidate identification number.
- Next open up your electronic instructions for each component (one at a time so you don’t get confused) and your blank written commentary document.
- Cut and paste all questions outlined in the instructions. Highlight these questions so you know what to delete after you write. Having these on your document, so you know what is expected when writing, will ensure all needed information is addressed.
- Also add the required number of pages and spacing for each written commentary at the top. This will help you with planning.

Step 3
- Write, write, write, write, write, write, write, write, write, write, write, write……
- Set time aside more time to write. I did use a personal day during this process. It was helpful to have a whole day set aside to focus on my components. .
- Use educational key terms that are found within the rubric.
- Stick to your timelines.
- Video sooner than later. If you do not like your first video attempt, you will have time to do this over.
Step 4
- Review the requirements.
- Edit through all writing and double check each requirement.
- Have someone else read through your components.
- Reread prior to considering submission.
- Find some support. Surround yourself with positive support people that will encourage you when needed.
- Finally, give yourself grace. You can do this.
