Two weeks may not seem like a long break, but even a short pause can throw off classroom routines, expectations, and momentum. Returning after Christmas break often means students and teachers need time to ease back into structure. Having a few key things prepared ahead of time can make the transition smoother, reduce stress, and help everyone settle back into learning with confidence.

Classroom Reset

  • Straighten desks/tables
  • Refill pencils, tissues, paper towels
  • Check technology
  • Toss broken or unused supplies

Lesson Prep

  • Plans ready for first 2–3 days
  • Review content taught before break
  • Read-alouds that support SEL

 Routines & Expectations

  • Plan expectations refresher
  • Review arrival, transitions, and dismissal routines
  • Prepare visual reminders if needed

Copies & Materials

  • Morning work copied
  • Worksheets or packets prepped
  • Anchor charts ready to post

Calendar & Dates

  • Update January calendar
  • Note meetings, testing windows, and events
  • Review IEP/504 or intervention deadlines

Student Review

  • Review small group or intervention plans
  • Flag students needing extra support
  • Review recent data or notes

 First-Day Focus

  • First-day back activity planned
  • Student goal-setting activity ready
  • One realistic January goal set for yourself

You don’t need to do everything. Just enough to make the first week back feel calm and manageable.
