Week One – What Worked? What We Need to Work On!
Whew—week one is done! By Friday, I was exhausted and grateful for the long weekend. Overall, I was happy with how things went. Was it perfect? No. That’s why I want to pause, look at what worked, and name the routines we still need to strengthen for week two.
If you’ve been following Southern Schoolhouse, you know I (Beth) teach in the classroom, while Shannon and Joy teach Exceptional Education. We all work in the same building, so our roles overlap but also look very different. Each comes with unique challenges, and this first week was no exception. I’m especially grateful for Shannon and Joy. Their support with students on their caseloads made a big difference!
What Worked in the Classroom?

Setting Expectations: Through read-alouds and discussions, my students and I created class expectations. This helped build a safe, comfortable space to learn.
Building Relationships: Our fourth-grade group is small this year, and most students have been together since kindergarten. They know each other well! I wanted them to know me, too. We did “Get to Know You” activities all week, and on Friday we played What Do You Know About Your Teacher? They loved it!

What Do We Still Need to Work On?
Relationship-building is still a top priority. A smaller class makes it easier, but several students have special needs. I need to be intentional in finding strategies that work best for them.

Routines and expectations will need more practice in week two (and beyond). Academics will also take center stage as we dive into reading and writing. I want students to understand not only what we do, but how—what effort, focus, and quality look like.
